Bald Eagle Hatching!
Since we are coming out of our habitats unit, and also finishing our study on life cycles, what better way to learn than to see it in action! Check out the following link (thanks to the Lee Family!) to view a LIVE stream of a bald eagle nest which is housing 3 eggs. The proud parents are taking turns sitting on the nest until the hatchlings arrive. So cool!!!

Butterflies!
We raised small Painted Lady caterpillars and observed as they turned into beautiful butterflies! We released them into the wild to let them thrive in their natural habitat
Have your ever met a barred owl?
We have! Last week, environmental educator, Lesley Royce, came to our classroom to introduce us to her barred owl, Merlin. She travels around to share interesting facts about her owl. She taught us many things that fit perfectly into our Science Habitat unit. Click on the link to learn more about barred owls and check out the picture below!

Attack of the Leprechaun... Ah!
What an exciting holiday school day for us today! At some point this morning, before any of us got to school, our classroom was invaded by a little someone who left little green footprints all over our desks! We even found a note left by the visitor...
Though he made a mess of our tables, he was kind enough to leave us a treat. Mr. Leprechaun- you are welcome back anytime! :)

Birthday Thank You!
Just wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart, how grateful and appreciative I am for my warm birthday messages and cheers. What a surprise to have icecream floats to top off our day! A special thank you to Miss Michelle and Miss Shelly, our room-mom extraordinaires, for planning and providing this yummy treat. I am truly blessed to have all of you in my life!! :)

Social Studies: Timeline Project
Our second Social Studies project has arrived. On Thursday, our students came home with the new assignment of the Birthday Timeline Project, due Friday, February 4th. For this project, there are two options. The first option is a technology timeline. The second option is a paper timeline. (Construction paper will be provided by us.) Both options weigh the same when evaluated , so please be sure your child chooses a project and he or she can work on mostly by him/herself.
Great links for technology timelines include: timetoast or dipity. Students can also create timelines in PowerPoint as well. If a technology timeline is created, it must be printed or email to us so your child can share it in class. No timelines will be posted on our class blog for student safety.
The focus for this project is for your child to create a timeline of his or her life up to this point, using certain key elements or landmarks on the timeline. Most requirements are the same for both timeline choices: a timeline should be created with the dates of each birthday until the current birthday, write two sentences about at least 3 of your birthdays, add at least 5 important events that happened in your life (they do not have to occur on birthdays) and write 2 sentences about each event, and at least 4 pictures (drawn or from a camera) to go with any event on your timeline. Make sure to include the date anytime there is a new event.
Ideas for special events include (but certainly are not limited to) first day of school, big vacations, lost your first tooth, sibling born, moved, or a big event like an accident or a surprise.
Enjoy creating this project as a family. We cannot wait to see and share the results soon!
P.S.- Check out this timeline of the evolution of LEGOs. Pretty cool, huh?!

Water Changes
In Science, we have been studying matter and its different states including solid, liquid, and gas. We have experimented to discover the properties for each including shape, size, color, texture, and whether it can sink or float.Using this knowledge, we will now be exploring to see if, how, and why matter can change between states. Can a solid become a liquid? Can a liquid become a gas?
Check out these video clips:
What is happening to the ice?
What is happening to the water?
Now enjoy experimenting with this:

Are you convinced?!
Last week concluded our unit on persuasive writing. We learned a lot about what it takes to really be convincing. To culminate the unit, each small group of students wrote and performed their own commercial for what ever item they chose to sell. After a class vote, the following video was chosen to represent our work as a class. Are you persuaded to buy this jacket? Enjoy!
